Martial Mindset for Self-Defense

When you think about self-defense you may immediately think about kicking and punching.  But long before you need these moves is the ability to develop a mindset for self-defense.  Your mindset can help you to stay safe and prevent problems.  It will also help you to take quick action. Check out ezinearticles.com for an entire series of articles I published on the topic, but for now, I provide an overview.

The first thing is that you need to be aware of your surroundings.  Many people walk through life without paying much attention to what’s going on around them.  You’ll need to notice how many people are in an area, the lighting, entrances and exits, and be generally aware of your surroundings.

But a mindset for self-defense is more than just being aware of what’s going on around you.  It also means that you accept that dangerous things can happen to anyone instead of living in denial thinking nothing could happen to you.

With a self-defense mindset, you also have the confidence to know how to make a quick plan to escape a situation or confront an attacker.  You won’t walk in fear, but instead you’ll have confidence knowing that you’re ready for anything you might have to face.

A self-defense mindset also means taking responsibility for your own safety.  You can’t expect other people, even law enforcement, to be able to protect you at all times and in all places.  Instead, you need to be prepared for a situation when you don’t have help.

This mindset is also about survival.  It’s about knowing and believing that you can do whatever you need to do in a dangerous situation.  If you’re confronted by an attacker, you have all the tools and motivation to survive.

If you feel anxious and vulnerable when you leave the safety of home – or even when you’re in your own home – it’s time to develop a stronger mindset.  It begins with accepting that bad things can happen.  You’ll also need to believe that you can protect yourself.

That may mean taking self-defense classes, reading self-defense literature, or looking for online tutorials for self-defense.  Knowledge is a beginning, but you also have to practice the physical moves in order to feel that they’ll come naturally for you.

Once you’re armed with some basic skills and you’re able to feel the attitude change that could mean the difference between life and death.  Developing a self-defense mindset requires that you also know you have the physical ability to protect yourself during an attack.

Armed with a proper mindset, you’ll be able to stay out of situations that are obviously unsafe.  And when you’re in any situation you’ll have more confidence and be less of a target for an attacker looking for a weak victim.

It’s a passion of mine to collect, and share situational awareness tips for all those that are interested. Please help the Budopedia, and add in the comments section any of your favorite self-defense, or situational awareness tips. Thanks for reading, and have a safe day.
